Over at the Daily Beast, Allison Yarrow has written a fascinating story about the emerging niche industry of sex toys marketed to religious folks. By way of introducing this seemingly contradictory world, she explores the offerings of a number of order-sites, including Book 22 for Christians, Kosher Sex Toys for Jews and Al Asira for Muslims, all of which curate their inventories to the unique needs and moral sensitivities of their respective consumer bases. And Yarrow finds that, contrary to the perception that the devout may suffer from furtive or otherwise poor sex lives, pious people are just as interested as sinners are in doing it well. The problem, however, is that many of them initially don’t know where to start.

Because of a lack of proper sex education, Ribner [a rabbi and sex therapist] said, religious couples often suffer from misguided advice. “One couple was told that if the woman does not like sex, she should take two Tylenol and finish as quickly as possible,” he said. In his work with Kosher Sex Toys, he has advised on topics ranging from the science of erectile dysfunction to the morality of spanking a partner.

The managers of these “marital aide” stores (some dislike the term “sex shop”) see themselves as both educators and bedroom missionaries of a sort, assisting god-fearing couples in their maintenance of the all-important marriage bond. To an outsider, visiting the religious sites feels a bit like listening to the bleeped-out version of an explicit hip-hop song: the substance is the same, it’s just missing the X-rated details … And while they don’t flaunt their holiness, they’ll occasionally rely on religious messaging to sell themselves, or perhaps put potential customers at ease. Book 22, for example, promises to “enhance the intimate life of all God’s children.”

Good sex is clearly important for a healthy romantic relationship, and if religious types (especially orgasm-desiring women) need a holier box around their vibrator in order to make it palatable, I say praise the lord.

This blog is aimed towards men. We have noticed a recurring theme. Men who order dildos for women typically go overboard and order ones that are way, way too big. Use of Vibes Common Among Americans

Two recent studies from Indiana University claim that not only is the use of vibrators during sexual activity a common practice, it could also have some health benefits.

The male and female studies, conducted among adult Americans, show 45 percent of men saying they’ve used a vibrator, with most of the heterosexual men surveyed saying they had done so during foreplay or intercourse with a female partner. Roughly 17 percent of the male respondents said they had used a vibrator for solo masturbation.

The studies show that 53 percent of women frequently use vibrators.

According to The Medical News, the studies, “led by researchers at the Center for Sexual Health Promotion in IU's School of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, are the first to publish data about vibrator use from nationally representative samples of the U.S. population. This lack of data has existed despite a longstanding practice by many physicians and therapists to recommend vibrator use to help treat sexual dysfunctions or to improve sexual enjoyment.”

In addition to demonstrating the common use of vibrators, the studies also found that respondents associated the use of vibrators with more positive sexual function and saw the devices as tools for being more proactive about their sexual health.

"The study about women’s vibrator use affirms what many doctors and therapists have known for decades—that vibrator use is common, it’s linked to positive sexual function such as desire and ease of orgasm, and it’s rarely associated with any side effects," Debby Herbenick, associate director of the Center for Sexual Health Promotion, told news reporters.

Michael Reece, director of the Center for Sexual Health Promotion, told Medical News that the studies are important for the contributions they make to an understanding of the sexual behaviors and sexual health of adults in today’s society.

"The study about male vibrator use is additionally important because it shows that vibrator use is also common among men, something that has not been documented before," Reece said.

The studies, which involved 2,056 women and 1,047 men ages 18-60, were funded by Church & Dwight Co. Inc., maker of Trojan brand sexual health products.

The sales bump squares solidly with one of the nation's most common trends during any recession: nesting. At the same time, condoms make for a relatively inexpensive form of birth control at a time many cash-strapped families are hesitant to grow.

"If people don't have the money to go out to a fancy dinner or are looking to cut back, Trojan gives them some real affordable ways to stay in and make some great memories together," says Jim Daniels, vice president of marketing for Trojan, the nation's No. 1 condom maker.

Contraception may also be more popular during a time when families are stretching dollars and want to avoid having more mouths to feed. "Obviously people in general want to avoid … unintended pregnancies," Daniels says. "But in a down economy those costs are even more burdensome to bear."

Pam Piligian of Fitzgerald+CO, the ad agency for Durex condoms, says that condoms are "recession resistant."

Still, condom sales increased at a slower rate in 2008, going up 2.3% over the previous year, compared with a 5.5% increase just three years ago, according to research firm Information Resources. Marketers say they are aware of the need to continue reminding consumers that condoms are an inexpensive and healthy way to have fun.

Carol Carrozza, vice president of marketing for Ansell Healthcare, maker of LifeStyles condoms, says that her company may incorporate the idea of nesting into future campaigns, along with a focus on new products.

"We're mulling both … and trying to determine what kind of products and marketing strategies we can come out with that will help people during these recessionary times," she says.

Trojan says the message that it's good to cocoon is already part of its promotions, and it will spend more on advertising this year than last as it launches a multimedia campaign to promote two new products.

Trojan 2Go, a thin plastic case with a condom inside, hits store shelves this month while a new condom, Trojan Ecstasy, is scheduled for sale in the spring.

Young women often don't wearunderpants at all, thus practically eliminating all possibility of a strip-tease. An older woman will agree to go to McDonald's with you for a meal. Younger women are too nervous to eat anything in front of somebody that they might possibly boff later. Older women are dignified. They are beyond having a screaming match with you in the middle of the night in a public park. Older women are experienced. They understand that sometimes, after 12 beers,a boy just can't get it up.
